What are PRP Treatments for Hair Loss?

An innovative practice for hair loss called Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections is gaining popularity.

Did you know that hair loss in women is actually very common? Up to 50% of all women will experience noticeable hair loss in their lifetime, often deeply affecting their self-esteem and confidence.

An innovative practice for hair loss called Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections is gaining popularity for its track record of results without the need for surgery or harsh chemicals. Platelet rich plasma comes from your own blood and contains concentrated growth factors that naturally stimulate hair growth, often providing results within just a few months of treatment.

There are various reasons why people experience hair loss, from hereditary conditions to hormone changes, damaging hair styles, and autoimmune diseases. While PRP treatments for hair loss are most commonly performed on women, they are also available for men and young adults ages 16 and older who are struggling with hair loss.

What are Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections?

Platelet Rich Plasma injections represent the latest technological advancement in treating hair loss or thinning hair. For this 3-step process, blood is first drawn from a patient and PRP is derived from spinning the blood in a centrifuge. This separates the blood and allows PRP to be pipetted off and then injected into a patient’s scalp.

The PRP is rich in growth factors, which help with hair growth by stimulating cellular activity, tissue repair, and new blood vessel formation.

Because a patient’s own blood is used, PRP treatments stimulate natural hair growth without the risk of allergic reactions or rejections.

How Many PRP Treatments are Needed?

To maintain hair growth, PRP injections are typically repeated monthly for a 4-month period.

For some patients, PRP treatments are only needed for a short period of time. Those with chronic types of hair loss, however, may need long-term maintenance treatments.

Are PRP Injections Safe?

PRP injections are safe for stimulating hair growth and many patients like that it’s a natural treatment option. While this treatment is a little uncomfortable, similar to any other injections, it’s a quick process and performed with a very small needle.

To ensure that PRP injections are the best treatment option for your specific needs, reach out to your board-certified dermatologist, who will review your health history to make sure you qualify for this type of hair loss treatment.
