Laser Treatment for Skin: What is it Used For?

Laser treatments have revolutionized dermatological care in recent years, offering solutions for both skin conditions and cosmetic enhancements.

Whether you’re struggling with persistent rosacea or looking to turn back the clock on signs of aging like brown spots and wrinkles, laser treatments are a great option, especially because they tend to cause minimal discomfort and require little downtime.

What Is a Laser Treatment for Skin?

Laser skin treatments, also called laser resurfacing, are advanced dermatological procedures that use focused beams of light to target specific skin concerns.

By precisely controlling the intensity and wavelength of the laser, dermatologists can effectively treat different layers of the skin to improve the tone, texture and appearance.

Benefits of laser treatments include stimulating collagen production to improve elasticity, removing damaged cells to improve skin texture and destroying hair follicles, all while protecting healthy tissues from damage.

While topical creams can be effective for many of the same skin concerns, such as acne or hair removal, they take longer to work compared to lasers.

Conditions Treated with Laser Technology

Ideal candidates for laser treatments generally include people with skin concerns such as acne, pigmentation issues, wrinkles, rosacea and vascular lesions, or those wanting to permanently remove hair on their face or body.

Laser treatments are particularly effective for skin concerns, including:

  • Acne and acne scars: Laser therapy targets acne-causing bacteria and reduces inflammation, helping to clear active acne breakouts and minimize scars.
  • Skin pigmentation issues: Whether caused by sun damage, age spots or melasma, lasers can lighten skin and remove dark spots, treat unwanted pigmentation and promote a more even skin tone.
  • Wrinkles and fine lines: Laser resurfacing stimulates collagen production, which helps smooth wrinkles and improves the skin’s firmness and appearance.
  • Vascular lesions: Vascular lasers can effectively treat conditions like spider veins, broken capillaries and rosacea.
  • Hair removal: Laser hair removal offers a long-term solution to unwanted hair, especially among people who are sensitive to shaving or waxing. Lasers can remove hair on the face and different areas of the body with lasting results.

Types of Laser Treatments

A number of different laser treatments exist that can be used to target specific skin issues. These include:

  • Pulsed-dye lasers: Ideal for vascular issues like rosacea, port wine stains and broken blood vessels.
  • Fractional CO2 lasers: These create tiny wounds in the skin to stimulate collagen production and treat wrinkles, scars and sun damage.
  • IPL (Intense Pulsed Light): Though not technically a laser, IPL treatments address pigmentation issues, redness, and some signs of aging.
  • Picosecond lasers: Effective for tattoo removal and treating certain pigmentation issues.

What to Expect During Laser Treatments

Results from laser treatments vary depending on the patient’s skin type and their goals. In some cases, it can take several months of treatments to see results, while for others results are noticeable sooner.

During a laser session, patients typically wear protective eyewear while a dermatologist carefully administers the laser over the targeted area.

Depending on the treatment type and area size, sessions can range from a few minutes to an hour. Most patients experience little pain during treatments, which is often described as a mild stinging sensation or slightly uncomfortable warmth.

If you have skin conditions like active acne, severe pigmentation or recent sun exposure, talk to your dermatologist about whether laser treatments can be helpful. Your dermatologist can assess your skin type, goals and medical history to determine the best type of approach to give you the results you’re looking for.
